Masters Collection

Coming November 1 - December 31, 2014

We will celebrate the history of master artists through a collection on loan from a local patron. This exhibition will represent pieces that range from the 17th to 21st centuries. It will include artists such as Salvador Dali, Henri Matisse, Michelangelo, Raphael, Andy Warhol, Marc Chagall, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, and more. We will explore the varieties of technique and subject matter used through the times and show how history influenced those aspects of their work. As well, we will take you through the journey of individual artists, showing how life experiences altered the way they created.  This exhibit will be on display from November 1 to December 31 in the lower galleries of the Johnson Center for the Arts.

The European Masters Exhibit brings to the Johnson Center a timeline of ideas developed into styles and movements led by the renowned artists on display. It reaches back into the time of Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, the Italian Renaissance, and a society on the cusp of cultural change and achievement. It follows the development of the styles into the Realist movement displayed by Degas. Then Monet exemplifies the Impressionist movement. Van Gogh, a post-impressionist painter, leads the way for artists such as Fernand Leger, Pablo Picasso, and Georges Braque to present Cubism in their works. Toulouse-Lautrec participates in the birth of modern print-making while Dali displays Surrealism at its best. Andy Warhol exhibits the more recent Pop Art movement and is joined by painters such as Urbain Huchet and Christine Oberthur who are still sharing their work with us today.
