Message from the Executive Director–Richard Metzger
I became the Executive Director of the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Complex in July of 2007; and since I have been in Troy, I have been shown a kindness and generosity that has warmed mine and my daughter’s heart.
The Board of Directors and I believe that making cultural wealth available to all in a thoughtful, deliberate and meaningful way is why the Troy-Pike Cultural Arts Complex exists. When I first arrived we set out to define our mission and our purpose: the cultural enrichment of the lives of all citizens through exposure to and education in the arts.
We believe culture is a system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviors and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another, and they are transmitted from generation to generation through learning and presentation. The Johnson Center for the Arts will present and preserve the values, customs, behaviors and artifacts that we as a whole society consider important. We will put strong emphasis on our own community exploring the micro but never losing sight of the macro. This community has many great and wonderful cultural assets which we hope to be able to present and preserve.
We also understand that the world is getting smaller everyday with the growth of personal computers and the media. The goal of sharing our culture with all the people in our community therefore includes work from outside our own community. This type of art work will help young and old alike better understand and appreciate the world in which we live. Our goals are two fold then, to present and to educate. Our educational programs will be designed to find ways that help young and old alike better understand our world, and our exhibition focus will be on the visual arts.
In June of 2008, The Johnson Center for the Arts opened to the public.
This historic post office (circa 1910) has not only been preserved but
rejuvenated as a Cultural Arts Center. I believe that The Johnson
Center needs to be a place visitors are both drawn to and inspired by.
We are more than just the sum of our parts; we are more than a building. We are more than an education program, and we are more than an exhibition calendar. We as a Cultural Arts Complex are the guardians, the teachers and the custodians of our culture.
I look forward to meeting you on your next visit.
